Amal Al-Tamimi, born in Jerusalem on January 7, 1960, is renowned as a feminist, social, and political activist. Her unique journey led her to become the second foreign-born individual, and the first foreign-born woman, to serve in the Icelandic Parliament, initially replacing Lóvik Gjerson in 2011 and later Katrín Júlíusdóttir in 2012.

Early Life in Palestine (1960–1995) Amal grew up in Wadi Joz, East Jerusalem, born to Salim Abu Khaled Al-Tamimi (b. 1969), a dedicated businessman and activist, and Nasima Al-Tamimi, Salim’s second wife.

She had siblings: Younis, Rawda, Safaa, Amna, and Salman. Amal experienced the Six-Day War in 1967, which deeply impacted her family. In her activism, she was imprisoned for throwing stones at Israeli soldiers. At sixteen, she married and had children before leaving her abusive marriage in 1995, seeking refuge with her brother Salman in Iceland. Feeling marginalized under Islamic law, she pursued education and worked for an NGO, earning a diploma in business studies in 1987.

Life in Iceland (1995–Present) Amal initially lived in Iceland in 1983-1984, separated from her husband, and worked with Noi Sirius. With her brother's help, she relocated with her five children to Iceland in January 1995. She worked various jobs, learned Icelandic, and eventually met her second partner, Hezar, with whom she had a daughter.

Her relationship with Hezar caused familial discord, leading to her brother Salman disowning her. Despite challenges, Amal pursued higher education, obtaining a bachelor's degree in social sciences in 2004. She renounced Palestinian citizenship for Icelandic citizenship in 2002, founding the Multicultural Ethnic Women's Network in 2003.

Her advocacy led to significant milestones, including chairing the Icelandic Migration Board in 2008 and becoming the first immigrant elected to the Hafnarfjör Municipal Council. Her daughter Palestine also made history as the first immigrant elected to the Reykjavík City Council. Throughout her journey, Amal Al-Tamimi has been a symbol of resilience and empowerment.
