Information

Mary Bawardi or Saint Maryam Bawardi is an Arab Christian nun who was born in the village of I'bilin in Galilee, northern Palestine in 1846 to a Roman Catholic family. In 1860 she joined the Sisters of Saint Joseph, but the sisters refused to allow her to join them. She was led by a nun to the Carmel in Pau in 1867, and later in that year she entered the Order taking the name “Mary Jesus Crucified.” She helped find the Carmel missionaries in Manvalore, India, and she returned to France in 1872. She built the Carmelite Monastery in Bethlehem in 1875. She died on August 26 1875.

She was canonized by the Catholic Church on November 13, 1983, after Pope John Paul II approved that she lived the "Christian virtues" of love, faith and hope during her earthly life, and attributed a miracle of healing to her intercession and on May 17, 2015 she was declared a saint after the approval of Pope Francis II.
