Information

Ibrahim Fares al-Yazuri (1941-2021) is one of the founders and leaders of the Hamas movement.

his life

Ibrahim Fares al-Yazuri was born in 1941 in the village of Beit Dras, near Ashdod. During the 1948 war, his family was displaced to the Gaza Strip and lived in Khan Yunis camp.

In 1960 he went to Egypt and studied pharmacy at Cairo University. During his studies, he became acquainted with the Muslim Brotherhood and joined them, while the Egyptian authorities arrested him later.

In 1965, Al-Yazuri was detained for about a year and released in 1966 and returned to the Gaza Strip.

Upon his return to Gaza, he worked at Shifa Hospital in Gaza. He also continued his activities within the Brotherhood, whose leadership in the Gaza Strip was in the hands of Ahmed Yassin.

In 1973, Al-Yazuri Yassin helped found the Islamic Mujahideen Society, and in 1975 he was fired from his job in Al-Shifa to open his own pharmacy.

He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Red Crescent in the Gaza Strip, and from 1981-1985 he was a member of the Medical Syndicate in the Gaza Strip. He also worked as a lecturer at the Islamic University of Gaza.

In 1984, after Yassin's arrest, Yazouri was appointed Secretary General of the Mujahideen. Yassin was released from prison in 1985 as part of the Jibril Agreement, but upon his return to Gaza he announced his resignation from the presidency of the Mujahideen, and Yazouri continued in his position as the Mujahideen General Secretary.

Al-Yazuri, along with his comrades, founded the Hamas movement at the outbreak of the first Palestinian intifada, and was responsible for Hamas' activities in Gaza City. In September 1988, al-Yazuri was arrested as part of an Israeli wave of arrests of senior figures in Hamas and sentenced to 27 months in prison.

In January 1991, he was released from prison and returned to work as the general secretary and high-ranking political leader of Hamas.
