Rabab Ibrahim Abdel Hadi (born 1955) is an American researcher, activist, teacher, editor, and academic director of Palestinian origin . She is Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies and Race and Resistance Studies, and founding Director of Arab and Muslim Ethnic and Immigrant Studies (AMED) at San Francisco State University .
Early life and education
Rabab Ibrahim Abdel Hadi was born in 1955 in Nablus , Palestine, to a Muslim family . She holds a BA (1994) in Women's Studies from Hunter College ; [9] He holds a Master of Arts (1995), a Master of Philosophy (1998), and a Doctorate of Philosophy (2000) in sociology , all from Yale University . Her thesis under the supervision of advisor Michelle Dillon was entitled “The Palestinian Question in Comparative Perspective: Inclusive Resistance and Exclusionary Citizenship” (2000).
Professional life
From 2004 to 2006, she served as founding director of the Center for Arab American Studies and associate professor of sociology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn . In January 2007, she joined the faculty at San Francisco State University. Since her appointment in 2007, she has been the only one in her department, and the rest of the teaching staff has been supplemented by student research assistants, visiting researchers, and lecturers over the years. In 2018, a lawsuit and several complaints were filed against her. It has been criticized by Zionist and pro-Israel groups such as the David Horowitz Freedom Center, the AMCHA Initiative , Compose Watch [English] , and the Louvre Project [English] .
Some posters were posted at San Francisco State University several times, containing caricatures resembling Rabab in a derogatory manner, while indicating that she was involved in terrorist organizations. In 2017, the Associated Students of San Francisco State University (ASI), the General Union of Palestine Students (GUPS), and the Black Student Union (BSU) sided with Rabab Abdulhadi and expressed their disappointment with the way he was being treated. Then-university president Leslie Wong .
In 2017, the mayor of Jerusalem was scheduled to give a speech on the campus of the University of San Francisco, which was met with student protests. A group of Jewish students accused the school of encouraging anti-Semitism , led by Rabab, who described her “statements as anti-Zionist.” The case went to court, and in 2018, a federal judge found no evidence of discrimination. This event revived the debate about freedom of expression on college campuses, and made national news. In 2019, she co-hosted a lecture via Zoom by the Palestinian political activist and member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine , Leila Khaled .
However, Zoom, Facebook and YouTube canceled the live broadcast of the webinar for reasons related to policies against providing material support for or praising acts of violence and terrorism. The United States government considers the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine a terrorist organization. The Leila Khaled incident added to the tense national news debate over “the limits and consequences of freedom of expression.”
