Aida Adib Bamieh is Professor
Emeritus of Arabic Language and Literature at the University of Florida in
Gainesville. She specializes in North African literature. Her work on Arabic
literature has aided contemporary research, and she has worked to provide
high-quality translations of Arabic works for English-speaking readers.
her biography
Aida is Palestinian, born in
Jerusalem. In 1948, her family moved to Egypt, where she earned a BA in English
literature and then a MA in Arabic literature from the American University in
Cairo before attending the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the
University of London for her Ph.D. in Modern Arabic Literature, which she
obtained in 1971. From 1972-1973, she received a Ford Foundation grant to work
as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
In 1985, I began teaching at the
University of Florida. Prior to being assigned to Florida, Aida taught at
various universities in Algeria. Later, Aida sought American citizenship and
considers herself an Arab American.
Aida's research has focused
particularly on Muslim women writers from the Middle East. She concluded from
her research that women contributed to culture and literature even in the early
Islamic eras, and Aida hopes to combat stereotypes about these women through
her writings and research. Her research efforts have also focused on the oral
poetic traditions of Moroccan women in North Africa.
She was the editor of Al Arabiya,
the journal of the American Association of Teachers of Arabic (AATA). She was
also the president of that association in 1993.
She is the author of Graying the
Crow: The Cultural and Socio-Political Significance of Algerian Folk Poetry
(American University in Cairo Press 2001). Her book won the Middle East Award
from the American University in Cairo in 2000.
Her translation work has also been
nominated for awards. In 2014, she was nominated for the Saif Ghobash Banipal
Prize for Literary Translation from Arabic into English for her translation of
The Bow and the Butterfly by Muhammad al-Ash'ari.
She is currently a visiting
professor at the University of Michigan.
