Professor Naseer Al-Arouri was a pioneering Palestinian academic known for his advocacy for the Palestinian cause globally. Born in Jerusalem in 1934, he immigrated to the United States in 1954 and obtained a doctorate in political science from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst.
He served as a professor at the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth from 1965 to 1998, retiring as a "Consulting Professor of Political Science." Al-Arouri co-founded the Arab American Alumni Association in 1968, the first Arab institution established in North America, and chaired it for two consecutive terms. In 1998, he co-founded the Institute for Arab Studies (TARI) in Boston, where he served as chairman of the board of directors until 2006.
In the field of human rights, Al-Arouri was involved in various organizations and initiatives, including the Independent Palestinian Commission for the Protection of Citizens' Rights, the Arab Society for Human Rights, and the drafting of the Arab Charter on Human Rights. He also served on the boards of Human Rights Watch/Middle East, Amnesty International, Third World Quarterly, Al-Quds Fund - Palestine Center, and the International Institute for Criminal Investigations.
Additionally, Al-Arouri was a member of the Palestinian National Council and the Central Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization. He passed away on February 10, 2015, leaving behind a significant scholarly legacy. Among his notable books are "Palestinian Resistance and the Israeli Occupation" (1970), "Occupation: Israel’s Occupation of Palestine" (1983), "Obstructing Peace: The United States, Israel, and the Palestinians" (1995), and "Palestine and the Palestinians: A Social and Political History" (2006).
