Rehabilitation as a Second Chance: The Lived
Experience of Coronary Heart Disease Patients
This thesis describes the setting up of a cardiac rehabilitation programme in Jordan and explores patients’ perceptions of the rehabilitation process. Using published literature, mainly Western, a cardiac rehabilitation programme was designed and implemented in a large teaching hospital in Amman, the capital of Jordan. At the same time a research strategy, designed to explore post cardiac trauma patients’ perceptions of their situation and the cardiac programme, was undertaken. Using a hermeneutical phenomenological orientation, the research explored what cardiac rehabilitation meant to these patients. A purposeful sample of 20 male participants was selected and their perceptions were explored, using semi- structured interviews, on two occasions; firstly, 6 weeks after hospital discharge and then 12 weeks after discharge. Interviews were audio taped, transcribed and translated. Data was analysed using both a thematic analysis and a more ‘grounded’ constant comparative method to ensure that the themes were more clearly grounded in the patients’ articulation of their situation. As a result of this more rigorous analysis, six themes emerged from the data relating to Rehabilitation as a second chance; Illness increased their health awareness; Faith and rationale empowered them to change; Restructuring normality facilitated their adjustment; Informed choices of lifestyle changes and Social context and support had the major influence in decision- making. The findings suggest that their faith and the cardiac rehabilitation programme played a central role in the patients’ acceptance of their personal responsibility in promoting their future health. In addition, it provides the basis for developing a culturally sensitive health promotion programme for initiating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in this population.
