Zaha Hassan is a Palestinian-American human rights lawyer, political analyst, activist, researcher, and writer. Zaha advocates for human rights in the State of Palestine and also calls for peace between Israel and Palestine. She is a visiting fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the New America Foundation, and the Middle East Program. She currently lives in Washington DC, USA.

Zaha received her BA in Political Science and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Washington. She holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of California and an LLM in International and International Law from Willamette University School of Law.


She is known for her extensive research work on Palestine politics, Israeli-Palestinian relations and peace among them. Her research work has also focused on the use of international legal mechanisms by political movements and US foreign policy in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She also worked as a coordinator and senior legal advisor to the Palestinian negotiating team between 2010 and 2012 especially when the Palestinian government attempted to obtain membership in the United Nations. She also served as a core member of the Palestinian delegation to the 2011-2012 exploratory talks sponsored by Quarter. They are often involved in Track II peace talks and efforts.

She is a policy member of Al-Shabaka Palestinian Policy Network, and she is also a board member of BuildPalestine, a global community of passionate activists for social impact in Palestine. She has also appeared as a political analyst and commentator on programs broadcast and published by Al Jazeera, CNN, The New York Times, Detroit News, Salon, and The Oregonian. In addition, she occasionally contributes to the Israeli newspapers Hill and Haaretz.

Zaha was one of the activists who proposed new ideas and formulated innovative strategies and approaches in order to calm and resolve the tensions between Israel and Palestine that flared up again in early May 2021.
