Information

Anis Abdullah Sayegh (November 3, 1931 - December 25, 2009) was an Arab writer, researcher, and thinker. He headed the Palestinian Research Center and was the owner of the idea of the Palestinian Encyclopedia Project. Israel attempted to assassinate him in 1972 with a parcel bomb, as a result of which he was blinded and some of his fingers were amputated.

his life

Anis Sayegh was born in 1931 in Tiberias. His father was an evangelical priest who immigrated to Palestine from Syria, and his mother was born in Palestine to a father of Lebanese origin and a Palestinian mother. He began his secondary education at the Zion Boarding School in Jerusalem, but after the Nakba, he and his family moved to Sidon, Lebanon, where he completed high school at the Evangelical Arts School. He studied political science at the American University of Beirut and published several articles in Al-Hayat newspaper. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1953 and wrote, after graduating, for Al-Hayat newspaper and The Arab Week and published his first book, Lebanon Confessional. He joined the University of Cambridge in 1959 to complete his studies, obtaining a doctorate in political science and Arab history, and was appointed at the University of Cambridge as a professor in the Oriental Research Department. He returned to Beirut in 1964 and worked as editor-in-chief of the English-Arabic dictionary, which was funded by the Franklin Foundation until 1966, when he resigned in protest at Franklin's objection to the content of a symposium he delivered at the Arab Cultural Club. In the same year, he met with the head of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Ahmad Al-Shugairi, who proposed to him the idea of establishing a Palestinian encyclopedia.
