Abd al-Rahim Abu Hussein (March 1, 1951 - June 23, 2022) was a Palestinian-Lebanese historian and researcher. He was a professor of Ottoman history at the American University of Beirut.
his life
Abd al-Rahim Abd al-Hadi Ali Abu Hussein was born in the town of Nuba, Hebron, on March 1, 1951. He received his education in Jordanian schools, and after graduating from high school in 1971 AD, he received a scholarship from the American University of Beirut, where he began his studies, to become a professor of Ottoman history at the same university in 1982 AD. He worked as a visiting professor in a number of American and Arab universities, and the Turkish Historical Society awarded him an honorary membership in 2013 AD; For his contributions to the field of Ottoman studies.
An article in the Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar indicates that during the Israeli invasion of Beirut in 1982 AD, “Abu Hussein entered a state of depression, forgetting the “PhD thesis” that he was preparing under the supervision of Al-Salibi. Take up arms and fight, or get down to work and finish your "PhD thesis", which is advice that Abd al-Rahim took to finish his work and enter the teaching staff at the university until his death on June 23, 2022. An article on The New Arab states that “Abu Hussein, along with the late historian Kamal Al-Salibi (2011), is one of the few who set out with their inductive tools towards clashing with the continent and scholastic ideas about Lebanese patriotism and its history in the second half of the twentieth century, ideas that became popular either because of authoritarian regimes or The growth of civil groups that encourage tyranny and invest in it.
It is noteworthy that he was married to Rola Baalbaki, a professor of translation at the American University of Beirut. He has two sons: Kamal and Tariq. His son, Kamal, died on October 28, 2018.

He was interested in the Ottoman archives, and wrote a number of books, including:
“The Arab Churches in the Ottoman Church Record (1869-1922)”, issued by the Royal Institute for Religious Studies in 1998 AD.
“Lebanon and the Druze Emirate in the Ottoman Era: Documents of the Important Notebooks (1546-1711)”, published by Dar Al-Nahar in 2005 AD.
He contributed to the book “Kamal Al-Salibi, the Human and the Historian (1929-2011)”, published by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies in 2016.
“Myth-Making: The Tale of the Long Rebellion in Mount Lebanon,” published by Dar Al-Saqi in 2019.
He also published a paper entitled “Turkish Jerusalem (1516-1917): Ottoman Inscriptions from Jerusalem and Other Palestinian Cities, by Mehmet Tütüncü” published in Volume 37 of the Journal of Palestinian Studies in 2010.

He died on June 23, 2022 AD, corresponding to Dhu al-Qi`dah 24, 1443 AH, at the age of 71. Some sources indicated that he died of complications after an operation he underwent before his death. A number of personalities and official bodies mourned him, as Fouad Siniora mourned him, saying, “Lebanon and the Arab world lost, with the death of the great historian Abd al-Rahim Abu Hussein, a pillar of thought, culture, originality, and history. The great historian, academic and researcher, the friend Abd al-Rahim Abu Hussein, who studied under the other pillar of history and historiography, the late great Dr. Kamal al-Saliby, was one of the pillars of history, rooting and searching for the historical truth, especially since he was distinguished by his research in the Ottoman archives and history, which was neglected by many, and he was distinguished in his its sources and information.
