Muhammad Habibullah (November 15, 1938), is a Palestinian poet and writer with Israeli citizenship. Habibullah was born in the village of Ain Mahel in the Galilee. He was a professor specializing in reading comprehension, author of the book series “I read, I think.”
Academic and professional career:
Muhammad Habibullah completed the primary and preparatory stages in his town, Ain Mahel, and then moved to the municipal school in Nazareth to complete the secondary stage, from which he graduated in 1958.
After that, he began his university education journey at the Teachers’ House in Jaffa, and was among the first batch to graduate from there. After graduating, he began teaching students the Arabic language in the primary school in his country, Ain Mahel, and became the deputy principal at the school in the years 1960-1964. After that, he began his education at the Hebrew University with the aim of obtaining the first and second degrees in the Arabic language. His education at the university lasted between 1965 and 1968, during which time he was also a teacher at Beit Safafa School. After completing his education at the Hebrew University, he became a lecturer, mentor, and deputy director at the Arab Teachers’ House in Haifa, and between 1969 and 2001, for 32 years, he worked as a lecturer in the School of Education at Haifa University and the Department of Teacher Education, where he taught several courses on the subject of education. He also worked as a lecturer in education at Emek Yezreel College and Tel Hai College in Kiryat Shmona. He also contributed to the rehabilitation of unqualified teachers in the sixties and seventies.
In March 1978, Habibullah traveled with his family to America, Michigan, in order to obtain a third degree in the Arabic language, and he specialized in the subject of reading comprehension. Muhammad Habibullah obtained the certificate within two years. After completing his third title, he returned to the country, and completed his work at the Arab Teachers' House in Haifa until his retirement in 2003. This means that he worked at the Teachers' House for 36 years.
In 1983, Muhammad Habibullah conducted a survey in the country, with the aim of examining the ability of primary school students to understand what they read. As a result of the survey, it was found that 50% of students do not understand what they read, and this result caused a huge uproar in the Arab community. As a result, several conferences were held to discuss the problem. These conferences resulted in the establishment of the Follow-up Committee on Arab Education Issues in 1984, of which Habibullah was one of its founders, as he was its first president, and continued in this position for 10 years, from 1984 to 1994. He is still a member of the secretariat today.
From 1991 to 2001, Muhammad Habibullah taught in the summer at British and Russian universities the subject of multiculturalism and interfaith education.
After his retirement, Muhammad Habibullah held the position of Head of the Center for Education for Pluralism at Al Qasimi Academy, from 2004 to 2010.
He also had a role in preparing and qualifying teachers, and instructed many teachers to obtain completion certificates outside the country.
I Read I Think Series Books:
Habibullah authored a collection of books: “I am reading, I am thinking” 1989 from Dar Al-Nahda, which has been used in many Arab primary schools since the eighties. Those who introduced reading comprehension to Arab schools, which in turn contributed to the formation of the Arabic curriculum.

He also wrote many articles, some of which were translated into English and published in foreign newspapers, and he continues to write articles on thought, education, society and educational policy and are published in many newspapers to this day.
